The statutory withdrawal-button wording, in all 24 EU languages

Read from the official language versions, not translated. Last machine-checked on 10 September 2026: 24 of 24.

Article 11a of the Consumer Rights Directive (2011/83/EU, inserted by Directive (EU) 2023/2673) prescribes not only that an online withdrawal function must exist, but how its buttons are labelled. The wording is in the directive itself — and it differs in every official language, because each language version is equally authentic.

Anyone running a shop in more than one EU language needs this table. Assembling it otherwise means opening 24 EUR-Lex pages and copying by hand, and copying by hand is precisely where the errors come from.

Provenance and checking. The source is CELEX:32023L2673 on EUR-Lex — Art. 11a(1)(a) and (3) for the buttons, (2)(b) and (c) for the field labels. The rows were read from the official versions on 2 September 2026. A script refetches all 24 language versions and asserts that each label appears verbatim in its own version; the run on 10 September 2026 returned 24 of 24.

The two buttons

On the left the button that opens the withdrawal (paragraph 1(a)); on the right the confirmation button at the end of the form (paragraph 3).

Germany and Austria

Germany — § 356a BGB, in force since 19 June 2026. Paragraph 1 requires the withdrawal function to be labelled „legibly with ‚Vertrag widerrufen‘ or another equivalent unambiguous formulation“; paragraph 3 does the same for the confirmation function with ‚Widerruf bestätigen‘. Paragraph 4 requires the acknowledgement without undue delay on a durable medium, carrying the content of the declaration and the date and time it arrived.

Austria — § 13a FAGG, inserted by BGBl. I Nr. 59/2026, in force from 1 October 2026 (RIS NOR40279256; Anlage 1 zum FAGG at NOR40279264). Paragraphs 2 and 4 carry the same two labels; paragraph 5 the same acknowledgement.

Both allow a different formulation — but not the same one. Germany says „or another equivalent in meaning unambiguous formulation“; Austria says „or a corresponding unambiguous formulation“. And only the Austrian text puts „ausschließlich“ — exclusively — in front of the confirmation label in paragraph 4; the German paragraph 3 has no such word. Departing from the words in the table leaves the safe wording in both countries, and Austria draws the line tighter.

The detail that gets lost in transcription

The English reads “Withdraw from contract here”, the French “Renoncer au contrat ici”, so the deictic is easy to assume everywhere. Six language versions do not have it: Danish, German, Estonian, Croatian, Latvian and Hungarian. That is not a transcription slip — it is what the official texts say. Eighteen versions carry a “here”, six do not. “Completing” one of those six departs from the statutory text.

Reuse

Take this table freely — including for client letters, blog posts and documentation. We ask only for a source note linking back to this page, so that corrections find their way home. If you spot an error, tell us: we will fix it and say what was wrong.

For developers: the same rows are published as machine-readable eu-withdrawal-button-wording.json — 24 languages, both buttons, the three field labels, plus a per-language flag for whether the official version carries a deictic (“here”). Free to use on the same terms: credit with a link.

This page reproduces and situates the wording of official texts. It is not legal advice and does not replace it. Whether a particular contract carries a right of withdrawal depends, among other things, on § 312g(2) BGB in Germany.

Who publishes this

The table came out of building Cooloff, a free app on the Wix App Market that puts the withdrawal function into a Wix store. The app uses these exact rows. The table stands on its own — it is just as useful if your shop is not on Wix and you are building the function yourself.
